Sharp Enamel Points

All it takes is one to cause discomfort!

EORTH

Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis

Most often affects permanent incisor (front teeth) and canine teeth, but also occasionally the premolars.

Most commonly affects horses >15 years of age.

Rostral Hook

Excessive Transverse Ridges & Sharp Enamel Points

Can lead to infundibular caries and  periodontal disease on the apposing tooth if not treated.

Peripheral Caries

Equine peripheral caries (PC) is a form of dental decay that primarily affects the outer layers (cementum) of equine cheek teeth, characterized by demineralization or degradation of the clinical crown. The presence of caries increases risk of tooth wear, fractures and periodontal disease.

Grading Scale

  • Grade 0: No peripheral caries
  • Grade 1.1: Pitting or partial loss of peripheral cementum
  • Grade 1.2: Almost total loss of peripheral cementum, some enamel is exposed
  • Grade 2: Involves cementum and enamel, enamel is completely exposed and discolored
  • Grade 3: Involves cementum, enamel and dentin
  • Grade 4: Loss of integrity of the tooth.

Prevention

Risk factors include diets high in sugar ,high sugar hay, feeding concentrates in diet, reduced grazing time, feeding silage, acidic water, breed Thoroughbreds most prone)

Treatment

  • Dietary changes
  • Measuring acidity of water source
  • Increase access to pasture
  • Treating coexisting periodontal disease
  • Removal of packed feed, in severe cases filling defect with resin composite
